I’ve attended the SustainOSS events over the years and highly recommend them. Most participants there are primarily focused on sustainability open source software and my interest is in our related but somewhat distinct challenge of sustaining the production of open knowledge about community resources (and our standard itself – but I think there is enough similarity and even overlap to make these conversations worthwhile.
So now that they have announced their next event will be a virtual forum, I’m passing word along here. Thursday March 13th. See below for their announcement – and let me know if you’d be interested in participating. If there are more than a couple of us I’ll see if we might work together to shape part of the agenda
SustainOSS Virtual Forum
Join us on Thursday, 13 March 2025!
If you have interest, passion or need around the diverse range of topics collectively described as “sustainability of free and open source software”, we invite you to join us for the SustainOSS Virtual Forum, taking place on Thursday 13 March 2025.
Much has changed since the first SustainOSS event took place almost 8 years ago. Open Source as a field has shifted dramatically, as governments, international actors, and large organizations are now deeply involved, and more critical digital infrastructure depend on open source components. AI is rapidly evolving the ways in which open source is produced and conceptualized, there is increased influence and control exerted by institutional stakeholders, and security has become a key concern in sustaining critical digital infrastructure. The Forum will explore these and many additional facets of sustainability.
At the SustainOSS Virtual Forum, we will survey the challenges, evolution, and surprises that are recurrently navigated but rarely documented or collectively validated in the process of running open source projects, program offices, or policy networks populated by researchers, developers, and policymakers. Above all, we invite you to share your experiences, ideas and concerns around sustainability across a range of scales, engage in respectful discussion, and envision goals and partnerships we can collectively embrace in order to sustain our open source ecosystems.
The interactive agenda will be co-designed in collaboration with confirmed participants in the time leading up to the event.
We encourage you to join us as we explore the who, the what and the how of realizing a sustainable present and future for open source. And we thank you for helping us spread the word!
